What is a Timeline?

A timeline is a simple way of presenting events in chronological order. Typically, it takes the shape of a graphic with a long horizontal bar labeled with dates and events.

Timelines can use any given scale representing time, depend on the presented time spread.

There are various types of timelines.

  • Text timelines that use plain text to labels events
  • Number timelines, with numbers in the labels or with graphs
  • Interactive

Timelines are used mainly for educational purposes to help students and researchers understanding the order or chronology of historical events. They allow visualizing time gaps between events, their durations, and overlaps, which resulted in a better understanding of how the previous ones impact the follows.

As such, timelines are particularly beneficial for history studies, as they highlight changes – such as wars, social disruptions, or revolutions – over time.
